Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

As a first-generation college graduate growing up in a small town in rural New Mexico, I recognize the barriers facing underrepresented trainees as they pursue science education and careers in academia. While I feel my own underrepresented background does not compare to the hardships that other historically marginalized groups in STEM have faced, I deeply understand the need to address these inequalities. I am fully committed to promoting diversity and inclusion of historically marginalized groups in STEM.  This includes providing access to the resources and opportunities to give these disproportionately affected groups the knowledge base for navigating higher education in STEM fields and careers in academia. Increasing diverse representation from underrepresented backgrounds and cultures is necessary and the key to driving science forward and making new discoveries. Strategies to increasing diversity in academia begin with enhancing exposure and opportunities for those from underrepresented backgrounds early in their scientific careers. It is also important to provide supportive and inclusive environments at all stages of scientific training to retain and keep those from historically marginalized groups in academia.

My goals are to build a research program that fosters an inclusive and welcoming research environment by promoting acceptance of diverse backgrounds, and developing a cohesive learning group where all cultural and racial differences are accepted and celebrated. I am passionate about supporting and retaining those underrepresented in science because we need diversity, equity and inclusion within the scientific community in order to make real positive impacts.
